Is it just me or has it gotten harder to compare national results since the new rules? I feel like every country just chooses its own interpretation…
Yes, but I think it’s a good thing when well-done. I must admit the factors being different is a bit hard to keep track of, especially as sometimes the detailed scores aren’t available.
But some countries have implemented great changes to adapt to each age group, hence promoting a reasonable progression, and to mitigate the “punishing” of the new rules and of the basemarks. I’m actually preparing an article on this. If you poke around in Spain and Catalonia, what they’ve done is quite great. In solo, they reduced the number of Elements to 6, so athletes have more time for transitions and artistry. Then in Youth, U12 and even U10 (in Catalonia), they’ve put limits to the difficulty levels, codified transitions so they have some value, and have also asked for one hybrid to be “creative” (so basically, like before, with nothing counting except bonuses.
I don’t want to go into too many details here as again, there’ll be an article on it soon, but I firmly believe some of these variations we see locally will ultimately be implemented globally.
